Each year we have more applicants than job openings in One Summer Chicago. We encourage you to keep looking and applying for other opportunities while you wait to hear about your application. SFA senior Gary “Chip” Morris, top right, is interning at Portland Stage in Portland, Maine, this summer where he teaches at a theatre camp for children. Morris will begin another internship there in September that concludes in mid-May. “Our study-abroad partnership with Rose Bruford College fulfills the same requirement as a internship in the BFA program, but I wouldn’t characterize it as an internship,” explained Scott Shattuck, director of the School of Theatre. “Students enroll in a different course and get in-class instruction, albeit in a conservatory setting that is quite different from our approach here at SFA.”
An internship is essentially an introductory work experience in a professional career field. It is sometimes paid, though usually at the lowest end of the pay scale, and it is sometimes unpaid. The function of an internship is to gain experience and insight into a certain field while also performing some functional work in exchange for the experience. Since the Fall of 2013, the Sustainability Studies Program has hosted a biannual symposium for students to give public presentations on their internship, research drug mart ashtabula ohio fellowship, study abroad, and/or volunteer work related to sustainability. Attending a Symposium or reading the synopses of past symposia on the SUST Blog is a great way to learn about what students are doing, how they found their internships, and how they benefitted from those experiences. A summer work experience, such as an internship, practicum, or teaching placement, is a great way to build career skills, strengthen your resume and get hands-on experience in an industry that interests you.
The GGI Pitch program provides some financial support for students who are participating in otherwise unpaid opportunities. While you are encouraged to consider other potential funding sources to support your internship, UChicagoGRAD will only award a stipend that brings the total support for this experience up to $6000. This condition does not include regular student support that you may receive unrelated to this internship. It does apply to funds supplied directly by the host or by another granting unit, intended to support this experience.
“By working at TSF last summer, I was able to establish a reputation for myself and be rehired this summer,” Easterling said. “It allows me to dabble in anything and everything I want to experience.” In the fall and spring, Morris will be involved in Portland Stage’s public school outreach program and weekend theatrical camps for children. Prior related technical internship or work experience is a plus.
Previous summer interns have hailed from graduate design programs at Parsons The New School for Design, IIT Institute of Design, Carnegie Melon, Northwestern University, Savannah College of Art and Design, and DePaul University .
